Discover a meaningful, achievable way to earn money in the yarn industry — using the knitting or crochet skills you already have.
(And it’s a path most makers never even know exists.)
What If Your Love of Detail Could Become a Flexible, Fulfilling Income?
You could be supporting independent designers, magazines, book publishers, and yarn companies — all of whom need skilled tech editors.
With more designers entering the industry and too few editors to keep up, tech editors are in high demand.
Some patterns are straightforward, and others are complex — but the core checks are always the same.
When you’re just starting out, you can choose to work on simpler, confidence-building patterns. As your skills grow, you can take on more challenging edits and steadily expand your expertise.
Tech editing is a skill you can grow at your own pace — with endless opportunities to learn, develop, and advance.
No more selling patterns on Ravelry or makes on Etsy -unless you want to - your main money-earning potential could be from tech editing.
Work flexibly from home and fit projects around family life or other commitments.
Use your tech editing income however you choose — whether that’s covering bills or guilt-free yarn shopping.
Make a real difference to designers. Tech editing isn’t just a job; it’s supporting, guiding, and cheerleading creative people.
Enjoy your own knitting or crochet projects again, without relying on making commissions to earn money.
Build a sustainable business based on your expertise — without needing to knit or crochet a single stitch for clients.
The craft industry is changing — and skilled tech editors are now essential.
“Tech editing is the industry’s best-kept secret — until now.”
Let me ask you something....
When was the last time you did something truly fulfilling — something that helped others, made a real difference, and you were paid and appreciated for it?
Most of us juggle work, family, and everything in between. And somewhere along the way, we discovered knitting or crochet… and fell completely in love.
You make things simply for the joy of it — and if someone actually wears the gift? That’s a bonus.
But as wonderful as our craft is, it’s not always kind to our wallets, so it’s no surprise so many people go searching for ways to earn money from knitting or crochet.
And what do they find? Etsy shops, Ravelry patterns, “become a designer” blogs… and endless commission work.

Almost no one talks about tech editing.
I only discovered it by accident when a magazine asked if I could check their patterns before publication — without knitting the samples. That one opportunity opened a hidden door in the industry, and I’ve never looked back.
Today, tech editors are finally becoming more visible. Designers now understand that truly successful patterns need to be clear, accurate and error-free — because nothing loses trust faster than a pattern full of mistakes.
And that’s exactly where tech editors shine.
Which is why the demand for skilled editors has never been higher.
This is what I discovered that changed everything...
I have my favourite designers — the ones I’ll buy from again and again. And then there are the others… the ones I quietly avoid because their patterns were full of errors. Yes, I could fix the mistakes myself, but that’s never the point.
Knitting or crochet should feel like magic — not frustration.
Over time, I realised I had a knack for spotting errors in patterns. At first, I assumed everyone could do this. A few years later, it became clear they couldn’t — and that this skill was valuable.
I began working with independent designers, and every pattern I checked helped them grow. More followers. More sales. More confidence.
I became their rocket booster.
I already loved patterns with no errors — and it turned out everyone else did too. When makers find a designer whose patterns always “just work,” they become loyal fans. And I was the one helping make that happen.
Word spread.
I went from a full-time programmer to a full-time tech editor in just a few short years. I’ve now worked on countless patterns, supported designers at every stage, and contributed to books, magazines and yarn companies across the industry.
That’s the magic:
I’m still firmly in the yarn world, still creating and designing — but without the pressure of relying on pattern sales to survive.
Tech editing allowed me to build a sustainable career in the craft industry while making life easier for designers and for the makers who use their patterns… including you. You’ve almost certainly worked from a tech-edited pattern before — and felt the difference.
Now I want to open that door for you.
I’ll show you what I know — the insider track, the logic behind the numbers, the method I use to find errors. And then I’ll show you how to apply it as you work through a real tech edit with me.
You may not yet know whether this is the right opportunity for you.
But until you “dip your toes in the water” and try it yourself, you’ll never know.
If you discover you love it — this could be your rocket booster.

Don't Take Our Word For It
Worth every penny and more!
This short course has given me so much insight and confidence in just a few short days. Carol is an excellent teacher and both her and Paula are incredibly motivating and empowering. They want you to succeed and they show it every day.
I've come away even more eager to learn more and start tech editing, and I even feel confident about tech editing small, simple patterns straight away!
Absolutely well worth it, even if, like me, you're pretty sure you want to do the full course anyway. Do the introduction course whether you're sure about the full one or not. You won't regret it!

You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know
If you’re an avid knitter, crocheter or designer, you already know that perfectly polished patterns are rare. And when you do find a designer whose patterns always work, you become a loyal fan — because nothing beats a project that flows without frustration.
But here’s the secret:
That reliability isn’t luck.
It’s not an accident.
And it’s not simply because the designer “has it.”
Behind every clear, error-free pattern is a tech editor — the second pair of eyes who checks the maths, the logic, the consistency and the clarity. They take a pattern from “written” to wow.
On the flip side, you’ve probably come across patterns with mistakes (especially free ones). The designer’s ideas aren’t bad — but it’s almost impossible to spot your own errors. Testers can help, but they only make one size and aren’t responsible for checking calculations.
That’s where tech editors come in.
And here’s the fabulous part:
This hidden role in the yarn world is not only essential — it’s also a genuine way to earn money doing something you already understand and enjoy.

If you’ve ever typed “ways to make money in the yarn industry” into Google, you’d probably assume tech editing doesn’t even exist — because Google will happily show you page after page of Etsy shops, fairs, commissions, designing, blogging and tutorials.
But Google doesn’t know everything.
So why haven’t you come across this magical, behind-the-scenes person who turns patterns from “written” to wow?
Because tech editors often go by other names — pattern checker, pattern reviewer — and their names rarely appear in the credits.
They are the hidden gem of the yarn world… and they absolutely have “it.”
Many makers dream of earning money from their craft, but let’s be honest:
Selling at fairs is tiring.
Etsy is crowded.
Commissions rarely pay what they’re worth.
Designing, blogging and tutorials are rewarding, but inconsistent.
None of these paths reliably cover the yarn stash and the household bills.
Tech editing is different.
I can’t promise it will pay for your entire stash this week or even this month — but I can assure you this may be the opportunity you didn’t know you were searching for.
This workshop gives you the chance to try it for yourself.
To see what this hidden role is all about.
To learn the foundations from someone who lives and breathes this work.
And the investment?
It’s tiny compared to the knowledge, confidence and clarity you’ll walk away with.

The Yarn Industry’s Best-Kept Secret
Are tech editors really in demand?
Absolutely — I’ve been consistently busy for years. Before I stopped taking on new clients, I was overwhelmed with requests from designers, publishers, magazines and yarn companies who needed their patterns checked yesterday.
Since Covid, the number of new designers has exploded — and with that, the need for skilled tech editors has grown faster than ever. It became clear that the industry didn’t just need a tech editor… it needed many more.
That’s why I began teaching tech editing.
My methods worked for my clients, and I knew they could work for others, too. Since moving my workshops online in 2020, I’ve trained over 50 tech editors — and watching their confidence grow is one of my favourite parts of this work.
I teach in a clear, practical, step-by-step way that takes you from “unsure” to that unmistakable lightbulb moment.
And every workshop, I see the same transformation: the excitement, the curiosity, and the thought that changes everything…
“What if I could do this?”

“Every workshop brings the same moment: the spark when someone realises, ‘I can do this.’”
Frequently asked questions
Here are the most common questions students ask before joining. If you can’t find your answer here, feel free to email us — we’re happy to help.
Where does the workshop take place?
Self-Study: Fully pre-recorded — you get instant access as soon as you check out.
Live via Zoom: Hosted on Zoom with support inside a pop-up Facebook group, plus access to the online training portal.
If I can’t attend a live session, will I miss out?
No. All live sessions are recorded and uploaded daily so you can watch whenever suits you.
We still encourage joining the Facebook group for community and support.
How Long Is Each Session?
Self-Study: Divided into daily lessons (about one hour total, broken into short sections).
Live via Zoom: Around one hour per day, with replays added to your portal.
Will I Be Able To Ask Carol Questions?
Self-Study: Not in this version.
Live via Zoom: Absolutely — both during the lives and inside the Facebook group.
I haven’t set up a business yet — is this for me?
Yes. This workshop is designed for people who are exploring tech editing and want to learn the basics before deciding what’s next.
Will I be a tech editor after this workshop?
Not yet. This is an introductory workshop designed to help you discover whether tech editing is for you.
You’ll have the option to continue into the full certification course afterward if you want to develop professional-level skills.
Do I need to be good at maths?
No advanced maths needed!
If you can add, subtract, and follow simple logic, you can learn tech editing. I teach you the exact formulae and methods step-by-step.
Do I need to be an expert knitter or crocheter?
Not at all. You simply need to be a confident maker who can read patterns and understands basic construction. You do not need years of experience.
What if English isn’t my first language?
That’s completely fine. Many of our students are international, and all materials are written clearly with plenty of examples.
What if I’m nervous about the tech or using Zoom?
Don’t worry — it’s simple. You’ll receive clear instructions, links, and support. And if something goes wrong, replays are always available.
What if I realise tech editing isn’t for me?
That’s exactly what this workshop is for — to help you find out.
Even if you choose not to continue, you’ll walk away with stronger pattern-reading skills and a deeper understanding of how patterns work.
Do I need to know both knitting and crochet?
No. Each workshop focuses on one craft only — either knitting or crochet — so you only need to know the craft you choose.
If you enjoy the experience, you’re always welcome to take the other craft’s workshop later.
How do I know which craft to start with?
Choose the workshop for the craft you feel most confident reading patterns in.
If you knit more than you crochet (or vice versa), start there — it makes learning the tech editing process smoother.
Many students go on to take the second craft later once they’ve mastered the basics.
